Fake gemstone traders nabbed in joint police operation

Standard

ABU DHABI: The Anti-Economic Crimes teams of the General Directorate of the Criminal Investigations of the Dubai Police, in co-ordination with Abu Dhabi Police, arrested a gang of three South-African suspects who were fraudulently selling fake gemstones, claiming that they were original.

According to Lt Colonel Salah Bu Asiba, Director of the Anti-Economic Department, two gangsters deluded victims by selling them fake gemstones and saying that a European trader wanted to buy them if they did not complete the purchase swiftly. The European trader was none other than their third African partner.

Bu Asiba stated that the department received a tipoff from an Asian businessman early in September, reporting that he was swindled by two African nationals who sold him fake gemstones. When he reportedly examined the gemstones, he found out that they were pebbles and glass.

Bu Asiba added that a team of criminal investigators was formed on receiving the tip-off.

One of the teams impersonated a trader who wanted to buy gemstones and monitored the two suspects to trap them. Investigations proved that the gang targeted shipping companies to lure their employees, after persuading them that they wanted to ship goods to Africa. When they met the employees, they offered to sell them gemstones at low prices.

Bu Asiba indicated that the team of investigators contacted some people who were offered to buy the gemstones and got information from them about the gang.  The undercover police agent contacted the gangsters telling them that there was a person who wanted to buy a big amount of gemstones. He reportedly agreed with them to meet near a trading centre in Dubai, in the Al Refaa area.

The agent headed to the place and met one of the gang members, while the teams raided the place and arrested them. Policemen headed to the hotel where they stayed and searched their room. The other two suspects left the hotel but were arrested later while they attempted to flee from Abu Dhabi. They were referred to Dubai Police for interrogation.

The first suspect confessed that he, along with the second suspect, offered fake gemstones to victims and gave them pieces of pebbles and glass, claiming that they were original gemstones. They confessed to dividing the money among themselves.

Mother’s Day 2012 Don’ts: Dish Gloves, Cougar Shirts And More Bad Gift Ideas

Standard

NEW YORK — What were they thinking? Through plastic smiles or gritted teeth, moms have to suck it up sometimes when Mother’s Day means a gifted toilet, unsolicited wash tub or anti-aging cream.

It wouldn’t be Mother’s Day if some mom somewhere wasn’t disappointed or downright piqued at gift time. Many aren’t looking to break the bank, though the National Retail Federation expects Americans to spend $19 billion on the holiday this year. But unrequested sex toys? A chainsaw?

Dave Hochman learned the hard way last year when he presented his five-years-older wife with a “Cougar” T-shirt, a freebie from a client, no less.

“While she does have a great sense of humor, let’s just say it wasn’t the best idea I’ve ever had,” said Hochman, in Monmouth, N.J.

Glenna Tooman’s uh-oh moment was when her now-grown son, Bill, was 10 or 11. He disappeared on his bike in Boise, Idaho, only to return with a Mother’s Day gift that kept on giving, a tiny bunny.

“I was very surprised. It’s the last thing you’d expect for Mother’s Day,” she said. “He spent his allowance money on it. We named him Garfunkel. We had him for years.”

A rabbit might be better than what a good chunk of moms surveyed in March by the website Cafemom received last year – absolutely nothing. And, while vacuums have come a long way in design and efficiency, they still ranked among the worst Mother’s Day gifts ever received.

So do unrequested sex toys, guys. Like the vibrator an exhausted Ashley Largent – home with a 7-month-old – got for her first Mother’s Day in 2004, from her now ex-husband.

“That was the only present I ever received from him for Mother’s Day,” said Largent, in Gaffney, S.C. “After that I told him that I didn’t want anything.”

In San Francisco, Heddi Cundle joked that her mother back home in England hasn’t quite forgiven her for a particular Mother’s Day gift: A plastic wash tub with dish gloves and a scrub brush, all from the dollar store.

Said her mom, Bev Cundle, in Leeds: “What can I say? How does a mother smile through gritted teeth. A washing bowl in blue, not my favorite color, a square shape to fit in a round sink! And a brush to clean out mugs. How do you make it disappear?”

Other, er, unusual items to make the worst-gift list at Cafemom: a Cuban cigar and stale candy left over from Easter. One mom, RoseMarie Luevano in San Antonio, Texas, received a chainsaw two years ago.

“My husband had been wanting it so he kept telling his family about it, but they thought it was me (who wanted it) and Mother’s Day was just around the corner,” she said. “I really wanted a certificate for a spa.”

Becky Jackson has no use for fussy spas, flowers or jewelry. She lives on a ranch in Lewistown, Mont., and her jaw dropped a few years ago when her husband presented her with a long, nicely wrapped cardboard box that screamed long-stem roses.

“I tried to hide my disappointment as I slowly undid the ribbon and wrapping paper, trying to figure out how, after almost 20 years of marriage to my rancher husband, he still didn’t know I wasn’t big on flowers,” Jackson said.

Inside was a new .22-caliber rifle, “perfect for packing around on my four-wheeler to help rid our ranch of pesky critters,” she said.

Big boxes aside, moms surveyed by the site PlumDistrict said they’d choose handmade gifts over store-bought ones. And while breakfast in bed is a sweet gesture, they’d choose another one: sleeping in.

In potentially difficult news for any eager gift-giver now scratching the chainsaw off his list, the surveyed moms also agreed they’d rather not have to be in on buying their own Mother’s Day gift.

Judith Schmelzinger in Hamburg, N.Y., might be the exception to that rule. She accepted a toilet in 2010, when there was no money for romantic extras for her first Mother’s Day.

“That’s what we needed at the time,” she said grimly.

Nancy Nolan recalls a useless but memorable gift 40 years ago, when her husband took their then 6-year-old son shopping for a Mother’s Day gift and returned with a jar of cream to fade age spots.

She was only 28.

“I just hugged him and thanked him for the wonderful gift,” she said, “and he just beamed. He was so proud.”

Worst Mother’s Day Gifts: Things NEVER To Buy For Mom

Standard

Almost one in three moms pretend to like their Mother’s Day gifts, an online poll conducted by Harris Interactive has found. Don’t want the mom in your life be part of that statistic? Follow a few simple rules:

Rule No. 1: Get her what she wants, not what she needs. So she’s been eyeballing that deluxe dishwasher in Sears because the one in your kitchen is busted? Mother’s Day is not the time to make cleaning dreams come true. She says she “needs” to tone those arms? Let her pick out her own Shake Weight. (Exception to the rule: Sleep. She wants it and she needs it and we’ve got proof.)

Rule No. 2: Avoid “gifts” that are more work for her than anyone else.Glittery handmade cards are lovely and sentimental, but loose glitter doesn’t seem so shiny when it lingers in the carpet for weeks to come. Think twice before you surprise her with a new puppy. Who’s going to feed it? Walk it? Train it? If the answer is mom, walk away from the pooch.

When in doubt: A day at the spa never fails.

Is that from a Christmas cracker? Katie Price flashes PINK heart-shaped diamond engagement ring from Leandro Penna Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2142236/Katie-Price-engagement-ring-Leandro-Penna-gives-fiancee-PINK-heart-shaped-diamond ring

She has never been described as modest.

And when it comes to Katie Price’s latest engagement ring, it’s no different, as the mother-of-three proved by flashing her giant pink heart-shaped diamond out at London’s Aura nightclub last night.

The 33-year-old star had been attempting to cover up the diamond on her night out, pulling her black cardigan over her hand in a bid to keep the jewel hidden.

However, as she made her way into the back of the car to head home after the evening out, Katie gave waiting photographers a glimpse of the diamond.

And it didn’t disappoint. The gaudy bauble looked like it had come straight out of a Christmas cracker – or from a Barbie accessories set.

Heart-shaped, pink and surrounded by smaller diamonds, it was nicely offset by her mint green manicure.

The debut of the ring comes after claims emerged in this week’s heat magazine that the pink ring isn’t Katie’s actual engagement ring.

The magazine claimed: ‘Jordan’s spokesperson confirmed at the time that the two planned to marry, but here’s the thing – we’ve learned that the ring in question wasn’t actually Katie’s, but was in fact borrowed from a friend.’

But Katie looked more than comfortable with her new accessory, whether borrowed or not, on her night out last night.

The glamour model opted for a Delicious Couture T-shirt emblazoned with the slogan ‘Wild Thing’, paired with a tiny pair of black hotpants and matching thigh-high boots as she headed out.

Katie teamed her outfit with a black alice band in her hair and a heart-shaped necklace.

Katie, who is divorced from Peter Andre and Alex Reid, confirmed the news that she is to wed her Argentinian toyboy last week.

After announcing the happy news, she wrote in her column in the Sunday Sun newspaper: ‘Husband number three? Will it last? I’m not surprised by people’s reactions.

‘I was watching a programme about Liz Taylor recently and thought about how similar we are, falling in love so fast and deep.’

However, Katie said she is in no rush to wed Leandro, adding: ‘We haven’t set a date yet and, for now, I just feel like a lucky girl to have his engagement ring on my finger.

‘If life isn’t for livin’ and lovin’, then what is it for? And anyway – three is a lucky number.’
